Tourists May be banned from Indian Tiger Reserves

Tiger safari India’s Supreme Court is to decide, based on a recent petition, whether to accept proposals to shift tourists to “fringe” or “buffer zones” outside core tiger habitats in order to protect the endangered species. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) which has filed the petition, puts the number of remaining tigers in India at 1,706, spread among 40 wildlife reserves.

However, according to Save The Tiger, a large Indian non-profit organization, there are just 1,411 tigers left in India. That’s down from around 40,000 at the turn of the last century.

With tigers nearing extinction levels the government has made several conservation initiatives, including www.projecttiger.nic.in, as have companies like telecom provider Aircel with its Save Our Tigers campaign.

Now the NTCA, which spends a large amount on conservation efforts that helps bring in India’s tourist industry some Rs 2 billion, or the equivalent of US$40 million, has now said that tourists have to be kept away from critical tiger habitats.

Tourist lodges deep inside tiger reserves are said to block tigers’ paths between forest parks, and vehicles used by tourists in Bandhavgarh National Park recently have killed two tigers.

Some observers describe this situation as a double-edged sword.

“If tourism has to be stopped in core areas, protection and patrolling need to go up,” said Prafulla Bhamburkar, regional manager, Wildlife Trust of India.

These proposals could affect India’s most famous tiger reserves such as Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh and India’s oldest tiger reserve, Corbett.

“It should not happen that tourists are moved out and poachers replace them,” Bhamburkar said.

“Humans living in tiger reserves pose the biggest danger not the tourism,” added Belinda Wright of Wildlife Protection Society of India. Wright owns a lodge in Kanha tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh.

India, home to the world’s largest number of wild tigers, attracts 17 million foreigners each year, granting more than US$100 billion in revenues, according to tour group Travel Operators for Tigers.

At 75, Tigerland Gets New Teeth

Safari in Corbett

Safari in Corbett

The Jim Corbett National Park, mainland Asia’s oldest, has turned 75 with plans to improve surveillance and protection of the tigers that it has already been conserving in one of the biggest success stories of Project Tiger in India. On Tuesday, it will officially launch its platinum jubilee when all five zones of the park will be opened for the tourist season till mid-June.

The park’s tiger population, 40 when Project Tiger was launched here in 1973, is now 214 — out of the 1,411 Royal Bengal tigers left in the wild in India, according to the 2011 wildlife census. The success story, however, makes these tigers a poacher’s target; as recently as 2010, poachers were caught trying to set traps for tigers inside the reserve.

The park now plans a new, unmanned anti-poaching surveillance system and a new tiger protection force. The 24-hour surveillance system, part of a project supported by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, will consist of nine unmanned watchtowers with infra-red and thermal cameras. The new, 112-strong force is another NTCA initiative; recruitment is in progress.

Three of the nine watchtowers, all fully solar-powered, are already in place. The project will also help gather data on wildlife movement and this will be monitored from a central station located in the reserve’s Kalagarh area.

These measures are improvements on a defence system that currently involves patrolling by forest guards, with the vulnerable southern region of the reserve patrolled by an existing tiger protection force consisting of former Army men.

Virgin group joins hands in saving the Tiger in Uttarakhand

Dehra Dun : Man-animal conflict in the tiger havens of India, particularly the Corbett National Park, which has the highest density of tiger population in the country and creating buffer zones and corridors for their movement from one pocket to another will now be raised at international fora to put pressure on the concerned authorities for the needful.

Richard Brenson, chairman of the Virgin Group has joined hands in conserving the tiger. He said that there are only about 1500 big cats left in the country and seeing their contribution and need in the eco-system, it was dire necessary that various agencies proved their resources to not only preserve but increase the number of tigers in the country.

Tiger in Corbett

Brenson who was at Kaladhungi in the Corbett Park area along with the co-founder of the international organization Wild Aid said that a number of countries including Canada and Britain were concerned at the dwindling number of tigers and many organizations in these countries were financing organizations in India involved in tiger preservation.

Observing that human presence and involvement was on the rise in the forests of the Park area of not only Corbett but other pockets containing tiger, he said that the movement could net get the necessary fillip without the actual support of the people, specially villagers living in the immediate vicinity of such parks and forests. Efforts would have to be made to reduce the dependence of the villagers on these forests so that there is the least, if not complete stop on their movement in the forest areas, he opined.

He said that this was the only way that the man-animal conflict that had risen over the years could be brought down. Besides, a number of corridors that the animals used for movement from one forest pocket to another had finished and the others that existed were in a bad shape and about to finish because of interference by man in these corridors, which has to stop, he contended.

Bresnon said that the Virgin group would join hands with other international bodies and organizations that were interested in preserving the big cat in the conservation process and would also provide necessary solar systems, for cooking, heating, lighting and communication to villagers to reduce their movement and dependence on the forests.

Rs 6.4 cr boost for Corbett villagers

Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park

The Corbett National Park is set to receive Rs 6.40 crore from the National Tiger Conservation Authority for further sprucing up security and facilitating livelihood development for villagers dependent on the forest. According to officials, the authority has already released Rs 3crore as the first installment of the grant.

In the latest tiger census, the Corbett National Park was found to have the highest tiger density in India with 9.4 per 100 sq km. According to the latest figures, there are more than 200 tigers in the Corbett Tiger Reserve landscape but factors like increasing population pressure from human settlements and threat of poaching have continued to pose challenges. According to department officials, the grant being received from the NTCA will be used for various purposes like boosting the patrolling, providing arms and equipment to staff and on developing livelihood opportunities for forest dependent rural communities in the area.

The authorities will draft a patrolling calendar which will be followed by members of the Tiger Protection Force and ex-servicemen who will also be employed for patrolling in Corbett. In addition to this the department will procure arms, field fear, night vision equipment and navigational instruments.
